The art of the Russian bath: how to steam properly for health and pleasure
The Russian bathhouse is not just a place to cleanse the body, but also an ancient ritual that heals, relaxes and energizes. Heat, steam and the aroma of brooms create a unique atmosphere where body and soul come into harmony. In this article we will tell you how to properly prepare for a bath, choose a broom, carry out the procedures and get the maximum benefit while avoiding mistakes.
What is unique about the Russian bathhouse?
The Russian bath is characterized by high humidity (70–90%) and moderate temperature (60–80 °C), which provides gentle but deep heating of the body. An oven with hot stones, poured with water or herbal infusions, creates healing steam. This combination stimulates blood circulation, opens pores and removes toxins, and brooms enhance the effect by affecting the skin and muscles.
The bathhouse consists of a steam room, a resting room and a washing area. Some baths are complemented by terraces or access to a pond for contrasting treatments, which makes your vacation even brighter.
Preparing for a bath day
For the bath to be beneficial and enjoyable, it is important to prepare properly. Here is the minimum set for a comfortable stay:
- Terry robe and towel: Choose soft, absorbent fabrics.
- Replacement linen and sheet: for hygiene on the shelf.
- Rubber slippers: for safety and comfort.
- Bath cap: protects the head from overheating.
- Hygiene products: shower gel, shampoo.
- Drinks: herbal tea, fruit drink or mineral water to restore water balance. Alcohol is strictly prohibited!
To enhance the effect, prepare a natural scrub (for example, honey with sea salt) or a face mask (cream with bran). These products will open the pores and make the skin soft.
Helpful Tips:
- Do not eat 2 hours before the bath to avoid stress on the heart.
- Remove jewelry and makeup.
- Think about the broom in advance - it will become a key element of the hover.
How to choose a broom?
The broom is the heart of the bath ritual. Each type has unique properties, and the choice depends on your goals:
- Birch broom: a symbol of the Russian bath. The essential oils and vitamins in the leaves purify the air, help with breathing problems and strengthen the immune system. Suitable for beginners and those who want to improve their skin condition.
- Oak broom: durable, with tannins that regulate perspiration and soothe the skin. Recommended for hypertension and for athletes.
- Fir broom: fragrant and hard, suitable for experienced bath attendants. Helps with colds, joint and muscle pain.
- Linden broom: ideal for colds, relieves headaches and improves sleep.
- Eucalyptus broom: helps with respiratory problems, but requires caution due to the thin branches.
For variety, you can combine brooms by adding branches of maple, ash or grass (for example, tansy).
How to steam a broom?
- Rinse the broom with warm water and shake off excess moisture.
- Place in a bag, tying it so that the handle remains outside.
- Place the broom in the steam room on the middle or top shelf for 5-7 minutes to soften.
Step by step vaping process
Before sunset
- Take a warm shower, gradually increasing the water temperature. Don't get your hair wet.
- Steam the broom in advance.
- Make sure you have not eaten or consumed alcohol.
First run (5–7 minutes)
The first run is needed to adapt the body:
- Put on a cap and start on the bottom shelf where the temperature is cooler.
- Relax, breathe evenly. You can lie down with your legs raised above head level.
- After leaving, take a warm shower and rest for 5-10 minutes with some herbal tea.
Second and subsequent visits
- Creating steam: pour mint infusion over the stones (2 liters of water + 10 ml of infusion) for relaxation or eucalyptus (on the walls) for healing.
- Steaming with a broom: it’s better to steam together. Lie on your stomach, your partner begins light tapping from the legs to the head, gradually increasing the intensity. After 2-3 passes, add fresh branches. Then roll over onto your back and repeat the procedure with less force. Duration: 10–15 minutes.
- Cooling: for beginners, a warm shower is suitable, for experienced ones, dousing with cool water or plunging into a pond.
Between calls
- Drink herbal tea or fruit juice to stay hydrated.
- Get some fresh air, take a walk.
- Apply a scrub (for example, 200 g honey, 150 g sea salt, 2 tablespoons sour cream, a drop of essential oil) to cleanse the skin.
The optimal number of visits is 5–7. Less may have no effect, more may overload the body.
Contrast procedures
Alternating heat and cold enhances the effect of the bath, but requires caution:
- For beginners: warm or cool shower.
- Experienced: dousing with cold water, diving into a pond or wiping with snow (in winter). This closes the pores and stimulates blood flow.
Avoid extreme temperature changes if you are a beginner or have medical restrictions.
Health benefits of baths
The Russian bath is a powerful tool for healing:
- Cleansing: Steam removes toxins through sweat.
- Blood circulation: alternating temperatures improves blood flow and normalizes blood pressure.
- Relaxation: the sauna relieves stress, improves sleep and mood.
- Immunity: steaming with brooms helps fight colds.
- Skin: Scrubs and masks leave the skin smooth and elastic.
The bath is useful for joint pain, radiculitis, chronic respiratory diseases and vegetative-vascular dystonia.
Contraindications
The bathhouse is not suitable for everyone. Avoid visiting if:
- Oncological diseases.
- Epilepsy.
- Cardiovascular problems.
- Acute respiratory diseases.
- Pregnancy, under 4 years of age or old age.
If you feel nauseous, dizzy, or feel unwell, leave the steam room immediately, rest, and consult a doctor if symptoms persist.
Safety precautions
- Do not drink alcohol or smoke.
- Don't get your hair wet before your first run.
- Remove jewelry and makeup.
- Do not wipe your sweat with a towel - this increases sweating.
- Rest between sessions as much as you spent in the steam room.
- After the bath, spend 20–30 minutes in the waiting room to normalize your pulse and temperature.
End of the bath day
After the last run, allow your body to dry naturally without drying with a towel. Drink herbal tea and rest until your breathing and heart rate stabilize. Only after this go outside to consolidate the effect.
